We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant / Tax Preparer to join our growing Auburn, Washington team. This is not an entry-level tax preparation position. We are looking for someone with approximately 3–5+ years of professional tax preparation experience who can confidently prepare individual, business, nonprofit, fiduciary, and partnership tax returns while communicating directly with clients.

A CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation is strongly preferred, but we will consider an exceptional tax professional with significant hands-on preparation experience. For the right person, this position offers the opportunity to expand tax-planning expertise and potentially advance into a Tax Manager role.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare federal and state individual and business income tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 1041, and 990.
  • Prepare complex returns involving small businesses, S corporations, partnerships, investments, and rental real estate.
  • Work with depreciation, basis calculations, K-1s, stock transactions, and multi-state tax issues.
  • Work with real estate investors and professionals on long-term rentals, short-term rentals, real estate professional status, cost segregation, 1031 exchanges, and other real-estate tax strategies.
  • Communicate directly with clients in person, by phone, email, and Zoom.
  • Gather and analyze client information and identify missing or inconsistent information.
  • Assist clients with tax projections, planning opportunities, and legitimate tax-saving strategies.
  • Research federal and state tax questions as needed.
  • Use QuickBooks, secure client portals, AI-enabled tools, and other modern tax and accounting technology.
  • Work collaboratively with an administrative assistant, outsourced staff, and other support staff to efficiently gather information, organize workflow, complete returns, and serve clients.
  • Coordinate with the broader tax and accounting team to provide accurate, timely, and responsive client service.

This position is focused on preparation, planning, and client service and does not initially require reviewing tax returns prepared by other staff.

What We're Looking For

  • Approximately 3–5+ years of professional income tax preparation experience.
  • Significant experience preparing Form 1040 returns.
  • Experience preparing business and entity returns, including Forms 1065, 1120, and 1120-S.
  • Experience with Forms 1041 and 990.
  • Strong understanding of federal income taxation.
  • Experience with rental real estate, Schedule C businesses, depreciation, basis, K-1s, investment transactions, and multi-state returns.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and confidence communicating directly with clients.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple tax returns and deadlines while effectively using administrative and support resources.
  • High standards for accuracy, efficiency, accountability, and client service.
  • A positive, professional, team-oriented attitude and comfort learning new technology.

CPA or EA designation is strongly preferred but not required for an otherwise highly qualified, experienced tax professional.

Experience with Drake Tax Software is strongly preferred, but we are willing to train an experienced tax professional who has used other professional tax preparation software. QuickBooks experience is also desirable.

Compensation

Base salary: $70,000–$90,000, depending upon experience, credentials, technical knowledge, and demonstrated ability.

In addition to base salary, employees may qualify for performance bonuses ranging from $0 to $30,000 annually based upon individual and company performance.

When performance incentives and the value of our extensive employee benefits are considered, an exceptional employee's total compensation and benefits package can exceed $130,000 annually.

Schedule & Work Environment

This is a full-time, year-round position based in Auburn, Washington. Outside of tax season, the position offers approximately 50% hybrid work flexibility.

During tax season, employees should anticipate approximately 50 hours per week and primarily in-office work to support our clients and team during our busiest period. Outside tax season, we return to a normal full-time schedule.
